A Midsummer Night’s Dream

What a show to have as your first semi-professional Shakepseare theatre experience. I loved co-directing A Midsummer Night’s Dream – in my opinion, by far Shakespeare’s most iconic comedy. My cast was unique in that it was exclusively comprised of first and second year Queen’s students, as a result of Queen’s Vagabond’s attempt to provide performance opportunities for younger students. Since our cast was an apprentice cast, our show had to be done with the same design as the main cast, whose show was set in the 1920s and showcasing the lovers’ narrative much like that of The Great Gatsby’s.

Yet, we knew we wanted to depart from that style. Instead, we chose to style the characters in vaudeville and place the narrative’s importance on Bottom’s acting troupe – what we thought to be the centre of the show’s hilarity. In result, we had the wackiest times in rehearsal and put on a show I’m proud of.
